“Blood and Bone” by William Lashner is a quick, entertaining read that takes place in the City of Brotherly Love. I was hooked on page one and the suspenseful storyline kept me reading until the end.
Kyle Byrne is the illegitimate son of Liam Byrne, a prominent Philadelphia attorney. Liam died when Kyle was twelve and he was forced to sneak into the funeral. He has been adrift and haunted by memories of his dad ever since. He can’t seem to hold a job, his house is in foreclosure and he drinks too much. Now his father’s partner has been murdered and Kyle is one of the suspects. Not only are the police looking for him, the bad guys are after him as well. They believe Kyle is in possession of a very incriminating file. He knows it has something to do with his father and he needs to learn the truth about his death. He sets out to find the folder before anyone else and he winds up involved in a world of conspiracy and intrigue.
William Lashner is the best selling author of a series of thrillers featuring lawyer Victor Carl. Blood and Bone is not part of that series. This is a stand-alone book and although it’s not strictly a legal thriller there are several characters in it who are lawyers.
Kyle Byrne is not the most likeable character. The flawed and angst ridden hero comes with plenty of baggage, but it does make him an interesting protagonist. Lashner gives readers a good perspective on what makes him the slacker he is. Unfortunately Kyle is not a character readers will find easy to empathize with. But they will find an ingenious plot with plenty of twists and intricate turns. There’s a good sense of place, Philly is well described and there’s no problem visualizing the city. And there’s a doozy of an ending that I didn’t see coming.
